Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet

ARTIS, the European Space Agency, EarthSonic and Amsterdam Dance Event present Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet.

The evening opens with Redshift: Slow Down and Reconnect with Time from The Museum of Consciousness, Tom Middleton and Gavin Starks: a 20-minute acoustic cosmology of the planet, built from ESA Earth observation data.

This is followed by a live panel discussion bringing together Joey Dean of Natural Symphony, Ruth Daniel of EarthSonic/ADE, Jamie Franklin of Roland, and two scientists from the European Space Agency.

The evening closes with the world premieres of new audiovisual works by Halina Rice and Natural Symphony, created in collaboration with the European Space Agency and presented inside the ARTIS-Planetarium.

For more than fifty years, satellites have been observing Earth, generating an extraordinary archive of data about our changing planet. In Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet, science, sound and visual art come together to transform that data into an experience that can be felt as well as understood.

The programme brings together artists, scientists and cultural thinkers to explore what happens when real Earth observation data becomes a source for music, sound and moving image. Following immersive audiovisual performances inspired by data from the European Space Agency, a live conversation asks how art can translate complex scientific stories into experiences that resonate beyond the world of science, and whether hearing and seeing the planet differently can inspire new ways of thinking and acting.
