When the sun sets, it gets darker in ARTIS Zoo than in the rest
of the city. And then something special happens...
Darkness makes things visible: stars shine, animals awaken and your senses sharpen. ARTIS invites visitors to discover this hidden side. Because at ARTIS Zoo, darkness is not a limitation, but a new way of seeing.

Start your evening at the Planetarium
You start the evening with a live show in Dutch at the Planetarium. Experience total darkness, discover the starry sky and see the impact of light pollution. You will receive tips on the best places around Amsterdam to gaze at the stars in winter and how to recognise constellations and planets yourself. Then you will travel to places in the universe that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as the Milky Way, nebulae and galaxies. Experience how immense the universe really is.
Walk through ARTIS Zoo in the dark
After the show, you can stroll through ARTIS Zoo in the dark. On clear evenings, a Planeteer will explain everything about the starry sky using a telescope and green lasers. You may even spot animals with night vision goggles. In the Small Mammal House you will discover which animals are active at night. Dutch-speaking storytellers will share the importance of the night, and a special Dutch-language audio tour lets you relax while walking through the park.
Activities for the whole family
There are also all kinds of fun and educational activities for young and old. Go on a Dark Mission through the park and become a protector of the night. Complete assignments using your senses, collect pieces of the secret language and discover the final location. You can also get creative in the ARTIS-Planetarium: make your own star map and design glow-in-the-dark stickers that will help you turn off the lights at home.
What you need to know
This is how your evening will unfold
The programme starts in the Planetarium. It is important to arrive on time for your reserved time slot, as the doors close after the show has started. Afterwards, you can walk through the dark park.
Volunteers will be waiting at certain locations with night vision goggles, and you can visit the Small Mammal House and Insectarium. On clear evenings, a Planeteer in the Dutch Garden will tell you all about the starry sky using a telescope and green lasers. The park closes at 10.30 p.m.
Please note: all activities and presentations are in Dutch.
Important rules for your visit
To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, it is important to take the following into account:
• Stay on the paths: For your own safety and that of the animals, it is important that you stay on the designated paths. Some parts of the park are cordoned off for the welfare of the animals.
• Do not use phones or lights: The dark is best experienced without extra light. Switch off your phone and torch during the walk.
• Safety at intersections: Soft lighting has been installed at intersections so that you can walk safely without disturbing the atmosphere of the dark.
• Keep it quiet: Try to make as little noise as possible so that the animals are not disturbed and everyone can enjoy a peaceful evening.
• Leave on time: Head for the exit by 10.15 p.m. at the latest so that everyone can leave the park safely.
