Join us for a journey through the new ARTIS Aquarium
The ARTIS Aquarium, which dates back to 1881, has been severely damaged by salt water from the water reservoirs. To preserve the Aquarium for future generations, ARTIS is investing in a large-scale restoration and preservation project that will take place over the next few years. Learn all about this extraordinary national monument.
The refurbished Aquarium
Once refurbished, the Aquarium will play a key role in educating visitors about a sustainable and liveable Earth, both now and in the future.
The most sustainable Aquarium in the Netherlands
The restoration of the Aquarium has provided ARTIS with the opportunity to undertake radical changes that will considerably improve its sustainability. The Aquarium is an important part of the ARTIS ensemble and a critical element of the robust sustainability ambitions that ARTIS has for 2030. These necessary renovations are therefore a major step in building the ARTIS of the future.
It’s now or never
In 2018, an investigation revealed that a quick, inexpensive solution would not be sufficient to guarantee the safety of people, animals and the building. A large-scale restoration of the ARTIS Aquarium was unavoidable and could no longer be delayed. ARTIS can only realise this project with the support of its visitors, friends, funds, sponsors, governments and lotteries. Now, more than ever, broad support is crucial.
