The new Aquarium takes visitors on a journey through the world of water, through wet and dry spaces. Each space has its own theme and tells a story about the connection between water, underwater life and ourselves.

No water, no life. No blue, no green.

The new Aquarium is part of a broader development within ARTIS. Here, experiencing nature is combined with museum-style storytelling, interactive experiences, art and science.

Water as home

The importance of water for all life

For almost 150 years, the water nymph has poured water in ARTIS. Now she has an even more important role. She shares a message: “No water, no life. No blue, no green.” This quote by oceanographer Sylvia Earle shows how important water is for all life on Earth. It is at the heart of the new story that flows through the building.

A Rhine to love

A Rhine to love brings the story closer to home. It shows how the Rhine has connected people, animals, plants and microbes for centuries. Yet we do not always take good care of it. Visitors walk along from an icy glacier to the delta, and discover what a healthy river could look like.

Everything flows

In the Everything flows room, visitors discover that there is only one amount of water on Earth. And it is always on the move. In an endless cycle, water connects oceans, rivers, clouds, landscapes, animals and people. Seven interactive installations flow into one another. Together, they tell one story about the water cycle.
