Did you know that without microbes, you wouldn’t be able to stay healthy? In this interactive programme, pupils discover how microbes protect us, but also how they can make us ill. From your mouth to your intestines, microbes play a crucial role in digestion, the immune system and overall health. Perfect as an in-depth addition to biology or health sciences.

What will students do during this programme?

Secondary school students follow an interactive route through ARTIS-Micropia, visiting microscopes, exhibits and activity stations. Depending on their level, they will explore, among other topics:

  • How gut microbes contribute to health in the small and large intestines.

  • How many microbes are exchanged through physical contact.

  • The role of microbes in treatments such as faecal transplants.

  • How bacteria protect themselves against antibiotics, and the difference between antibiotics and vaccines.

  • How certain microbes are responsible for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other diseases.

The lesson materials provide structure and a clear progression, enabling students to gain new insights step by step into the world of microbes and health.
