Research at ARTIS
Natura Artis Magistra means “nature as the teacher of art and science.” And there is still so much we can learn from nature. Since its founding, ARTIS has opened the zoo to scientific research.
What does ARTIS research?
From invisible life at ARTIS-Micropia to the many animal and plant species in the park. At ARTIS-Groote Museum, researchers and students share their findings with a wider audience.
Cognitive behavioral ecology
How humans and other animals make decisions. This research helps us better understand our own behavior and that of other species.
Microbiology
Applied microbiological research into the role bacteria play in our health.
Biodiversity
A diverse environment is essential for the entire ecosystem. Only when we know exactly what lives within it can we take action.
Animal welfare and behavior
By studying animal behavior, we gain more insight into what animals need and how they are doing.
Health and medicine
Veterinary research in zoos also helps to better monitor and protect endangered relatives in the wild.
Scientific research generates new knowledge, which is shared among zoos and conservation organizations.
Collaboration with others
ARTIS collaborates nationally and internationally with universities, colleges, and other knowledge institutes. Since 2009, ARTIS has also offered academic chairs. The first was the Chair of Culture, Landscape and Nature, established in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, and held by Dr. Erik A. de Jong.
