Dikkertje Dap artwork by Frank Rosen
The statue of Dikkertje Dap was given to ARTIS by illustrator Wim Bijmoer.
The first publication of Dikkertje Dap
Dikkertje Dap climbed the stairs for the first time in 1950: that's when this song by Annie M.G. Schmidt (1911-1995), which is now ingrained in the collective memory of the Netherlands, was published on the children's page of Het Parool, where Annie M.G. Schmidt was then working as an editor.

The statue of Dikkertje Dap
The statue refers to Wim Bijmoer's illustration of Dikkertje Dap climbing a staircase to slide down the neck of the giraffe in ARTIS. The statue first stood between the Bokken rock and the current Pampa, but since the restoration of the Forest House in 2011, it has stood between this building and the Reptile House.
