Dutch wildlife veterinarian Martine van Zijll Langhout launches expanded English edition of Lessons from the Wild
- 23 September 2026
Dutch wildlife veterinarian and ARTIS veterinarian Martine van Zijll Langhout will launch Lessons from the Wild, the expanded English-language edition of her Dutch bestseller Over Leven in het Wild, on Thursday 24 September at the ARTIS Groote Museum in Amsterdam. Princess Irene of the Netherlands, who has long championed a deeper connection between people and nature, will receive the first copy.
Lessons from the Wild is an expanded and adapted English edition of the Dutch bestseller Over Leven in het Wild, featuring additional pages, photographs and maps.
Drawing on more than three decades of work with wildlife, Van Zijll Langhout takes readers from the rainforests of Gabon and Cameroon to the wilderness surrounding South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Her experiences include living among gorillas, working with chimpanzees and treating lions, rhinos, elephants and giraffes as a wildlife veterinarian.
The book combines remarkable encounters with wild animals with broader reflections on resilience, courage, wellbeing and our relationship with the natural world. It also explores the urgency and complexity of wildlife conservation.
The launch takes place during Van Zijll Langhout’s lecture “Learning from Wild Animals”, at the ARTIS-Groote Museum.
Following the launch, Lessons from the Wild will be available internationally through major online and retail book channels.
“A heartwarming book full of adventure and love for animals.”
“Martine’s incredible adventures teach us fascinating lessons about ourselves.”
