Natura ARTIS Magistra: Nature is the teacher of art and science. This is what ARTIS has stood for since 1838. Nature continues to inspire us with its beauty, ingenuity and complexity. And where nature inspires wonder, art naturally follows.
From 9 October 2026, ARTIS-Groote Museum will invite renowned artists.
In a specially designed studio at the heart of the museum, four artists create new work live and talk to visitors about their work and their connection to nature.

Anouk Griffioen
Nature gradually came to play an increasingly important role in Anouk Griffioen’s work. While she began by drawing portraits, human elements eventually disappeared from her drawings altogether. Griffioen photographs nature and brings together fragments of these images, from the structures of branches to the spaces between them. The result is landscapes that feel familiar but do not exist anywhere in reality: nature that can only be visited through her work.
A look behind the scenes
In the West Hall, you can take a look inside the ARTIS collection depot. Art and nature have come together here for centuries. After all, art is not just about beauty.
