Sustainability

ARTIS sets a good example by contributing to a greener and more liveable world and has set itself the goal of maximising its positive environmental impact. In 2030, the two million visitors will find themselves in a natural park that is completely climate-positive, does not use any fossil fuels and recycles all waste flows.

To achieve this, ARTIS collaborates with a range of parties including municipal and national authorities, academic institutions, partner businesses and the local community, to improve all facets of sustainability while keeping the environment liveable.

  • Fossil-free by 2030 – ARTIS will phase out its use of fossil fuels for heating and transport, make efficient use of power generation, storage and green energy, and minimise carbon-powered transport by partners and visitors.
  • By 2030, ARTIS will be free of unrecyclable waste flows (less than 5% landfill) – ARTIS is opting for materials with a low ecological footprint and composts all green waste.
  • ARTIS will have halve its drinking water consumption by 2030 – ARTIS is making a positive contribution to a climate-adaptive Amsterdam and reduces its consumption of tap water by using rain and canal water for low-grade applications.
  • ARTIS as a biodiversity hub, day and night – In 2022, ARTIS started taking light measurements and introducing darkness to make ARTIS the ideal location for biodiversity, even at night. ARTIS's goal is to be Europe's first Urban Night Sky location.
