Nature conservancy organisations

ARTIS also belongs to a number of organisations involved in the conservation of nature.


The  International Union for the Conservation of Nature is the international umbrella organisation of government and nature conservancy organisations dedicated to protecting nature and biodiversity.


The  World Association of Zoos and Aquariums  provides support to zoos and aquariums in the area of nature conservation.


The European Association of Zoos and Aquariums supports cooperation between European zoos and aquariums in the field of education, research and conservation. In addition, they have long-term campaigns to bring important issues to the attention of all members. At this moment the focus is on Which fish? with a focus on sustainable fishing, both for the animals in terms of collection and nutrition and also for visitors in the catering industry.


The  Nederlandse Vereniging van Dierentuinenis the umbrella organisation for the 14 largest zoos in the Netherlands. The NVD member zoos work together closely in the areas of education, recreation, nature conservation and research.


The  Nederlandse Vereniging van Botanische Tuinen is an umbrella organization and has 25 gardens throughout the Netherlands. Its mission is to contribute to the preservation of plant biodiversity within the framework of a sustainable world. Since Wednesday 3 June ARTIS is officially a botanical garden.


The  International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers is committed to the protection of butterflies in the wild and habitat conservation.  


The  Nederlandse Dendrologische Vereniging  is dedicated to increasing knowledge about trees in both the practical and scientific sense. In addition, the association aims to contribute to the preservation of collections and endangered tree species.
