Male vulture pair hatches egg at ARTIS

At ARTIS, a male griffon vulture pair has successfully hatched an egg for the first time. The egg hatched in March, and the chick has since been well cared for by the two males.

Griffon vultures are monogamous and share parenting duties. Since the original pair had irregularly incubated the egg, it was transferred to the male pair.

Zookeeper Nanja: "We are very happy that this pair is now raising a real chick. They are doing wonderfully and take turns very well."

Homosexual behavior is observed in many animal species. ARTIS has been sharing stories about sexual diversity in the animal kingdom for over 30 years. This pair is a great example of that.

Conservation program

ARTIS has been supporting the LIFE Safe for Vultures project in Sardinia for years and has released eight vultures there. This chick may follow in the future.
