Art in the Aquarium
Contemporary artists show how water lives, moves and connects. Their work invites visitors to look at the Aquarium and the underwater world in a different way.
Artists offer a different view of our relationship with water in the Aquarium
ARTIS and art belong together
Since its founding, ARTIS has been a place where artists come to find inspiration in nature. ARTIS asked several contemporary artists to create works especially for the Aquarium. Art can make you pause, spark wonder, raise questions and invite reflection. And much more. Discover it in the ARTIS Aquarium.
Joana Schneider
Joana Schneider works with old ship ropes and fishing nets. By wrapping them in yarn, she changes their shape and colour. For the Aquarium, she created the room-filling installation Divine Idylle. It is a world of its own, inspired by De Slufter on Texel, an area where sea and land meet.
Marshmallow Laser Feast
The artwork Water Body by Marshmallow Laser Feast shows the circulation of water across the Earth. You follow the routes of ocean currents, river networks and the movements of whales and seabirds within them. You see how water connects climate, ecosystems and life.
Zoro Feigl
How Water Grows shows how quickly forms can appear and disappear, and how fleeting beauty can be. In this installation, a balance between air and liquid creates unique bubbles again and again. They evoke images of flowing water, growing micro-organisms and plants. Endlessly fascinating, like a campfire made of water, they constantly take on new shapes.
More art
The Aquarium also features artworks by Vanessa Barragão, Klarenbeek & Dros and Claudia Martínez Garay. Several illustrators also helped tell stories in the themed spaces: Joost Stokhof, Jan Rothuizen, Noortje Rap, Lotte Dijkstra and Annemieke Bunjes.
Art in ARTIS
ARTIS and art have been connected since the very beginning. This is reflected in the motto Natura Artis Magistra, Latin for “Nature is the teacher of art and science”. Artists have long found their way to ARTIS and drawn inspiration from nature in the park. They created sculptures, drawings and paintings there. Some of these artworks can be seen in the park or are part of the ARTIS heritage collection. Today, ARTIS continues to give space to artists.
