Pop-up aquarium

After the closure of the ARTIS Aquarium, a “pop-up” aquarium was set up behind the scenes. During the restoration, several fish, corals, and other aquatic life were housed here. It also served as a testing ground for the latest filtration systems, lighting, and more sustainable concrete. Now that the reopening of the ARTIS Aquarium is approaching, this facility has been significantly expanded. Around sixty aquariums and three large tanks—each with a diameter of 2.5 meters—will serve as quarantine basins over the coming year, ensuring that fish from other European zoos can be properly received.

Optimal care

In the meantime, aquarists are focusing on the optimal care and breeding of all future species. This way, just as with many mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, they can ensure healthy reserve populations. That is crucial, because although about seventy percent of Earth is covered in water, nearly half of all aquatic life is under threat—often due to human impact.
