During the Weekend of Science, visitors to ARTIS-Micropia can discover what lives in water. Take a closer look at water from a farm ditch, the Amsterdam canals, and from the sea under a microscope. A world full of microbes comes to life.

What's hiding in the water?

At first glance, it looks just like water…

But under the microscope, there’s plenty to see. Micropia features three aquariums containing different types of water: from a farm ditch, an Amsterdam canal, and the sea.

Accompanied by a lab technician, visitors look through the microscope. What microbes are swimming, floating, and swarming through the water? And what role do these tiny organisms play in nature?
