During the Second World War, the gates of ARTIS did remain open; but not for everyone. Secretly, ARTIS accommodated many people on the run, both resistance fighters and Jews. Discover what happened in ARTIS during World War II with a guided tour or an audio tour.

During World War II, countless people were in hiding at ARTIS, while German soldiers came to the park for a day out. Would you like to know how the people in hiding fared? And how did the animals do during the war?
Listen to the different stories of the people and animals who survived in ARTIS and see the buildings and animals through different eyes.

Audio tour
Besides the guided tours, from 4 May a special audio tour will also be available to all visitors. You will be taken to ARTIS at the time of World War II. In nine stories, spread throughout the park, you will discover what happened in ARTIS at that time.
Via various QR codes in the park, you can hear the nine stories. Don't forget your phone and earphones if you visit ARTIS during this period, and make sure your phone has enough battery.
