ARTIS during the war
During the Second World War, ARTIS served as a hiding place for Jews and members of the resistance, while German soldiers continued coming to the zoo for entertainment.
The resistance’s attack on the city’s population register in 1943, housed in the Ledenlokalen, is still commemorated each year. Listen to the stories about the people and animals that had to come through World War II in ARTIS.
