While you're here, learn to grow your own edible garden, or attend a talk by a veterinarian, microbiologist or plant expert, who can tell you all about our edible gardens. During peak periods, e.g. school holidays and public holidays, both the ARTIS car park and multi-storey car parks and roads in the neighbourhood fill up quickly. It is therefore a good idea to travel by public transport on peak days. That way you'll spend less time in traffic jams and more time enjoying ARTIS.

Assistance dogs and other animals/pets
Assistance dogs and/or other animals/pets are not allowed in ARTIS. Many of the animals live in open or semi-open enclosures/cages. Visitors wander among the free-ranging animals in the Ape House and Bird House, on Lemurland and the Children's Farm, in the Butterfly Pavilion and the Bennett's Wallaby enclosure. Visitors can also see the pelicans and black-tailed prairie dogs in semi-open enclosures. Some animals and birds, such as guineafowl, roam freely through the whole park. In principle, the animals at ARTIS are wild animals and usually not tame. Unfamiliar dogs and/or other animals/pets could cause them to panic. This means that not even guide dogs for the blind or visually impaired are allowed into ARTIS. For this reason, blind or visually impaired visitors to ARTIS may be accompanied by one person free of charge. Despite the new law coming into force in 2017, exempting assistance dogs from public spaces protection orders, assistance dogs are not allowed in ARTIS. Assistance dogs are allowed in Micropia and on Artisplein, however.
