How can we continue to experience our connection with planet Earth when nature is increasingly disappearing from our daily lives? At ARTIS, in the middle of the city, you are literally surrounded by all other life on Earth. It is precisely in this physical place that the distance between humans and ecology is reduced. You stand eye to eye with your body's own microbes in ARTIS-Micropia, suddenly feel small and insignificant when looking at Earth from space in the ARTIS-Planetarium and marvel at the unique, evolutionary characteristics with which other animals and plants survive and contribute to their habitat in the ARTIS-Park and the ARTIS-Groote Museum.
Everything is connected
Where we used to distinguish between flora and fauna, culture and nature, we now know that everything exists alongside and with each other in a complex, beautiful ecosystem. ARTIS makes that connectedness small and palpable and its mission is to inspire and activate its visitors to contribute to a liveable world themselves. ARTIS brings the natural world close by. That is why Planetary Health will be an integral part of ARTIS from 2023.
