Experience a sweltering summernight at ARTIS

– June 2, 2021

ARTIS is is excited, excited for the summer. From Friday 9 July to Sunday 5 September, there are various activities for the whole family during the day. When night falls and the sky turns red, ARTIS offers an evening program filled with love on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Experience the park on these evenings outside of regular opening hours and walk the Multicolored Love Route, an audio tour about sexual diversity in nature. On Friday evenings, sensual jazz sounds resound through the park during Jazz Talents at the Plantage and there is always room in the warm grass for a summer evening picnic.

Sweltering Summer Nights

Nature is full of love. Love in all kinds of colors and forms. Nothing is foreign in the love play of animals, plants and microbes. From bisexual Japanese macaques to monogamous griffon vultures and intersex wallabies. From affectionate fleas to noisy sex, from changing partners to a love bond for life. Let the Multicolored Love Route, an audio walk through ARTIS, take you along the multifaceted forms of sexuality in nature. You can follow the audio walk by scanning a QR-code at the various locations in ARTIS. Visitors only need to bring their own headphones or earphones. An English version is also available. Some of the spicy stories are more suitable for listeners over 16.

On all evenings, musical sounds resound through the park thanks to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. On Friday evenings they will perform an intimate and acoustic jazz concert during the jazz festival Jazz Talents at the Plantage. From 18.00-20.00 young musicians of the Conservatorium Amsterdam play an intimate and acoustic jazz concert in the middle of the park. It is the first edition where Jazz Talents at the Plantage also takes place in ARTIS. The annual festival has been a success for several years in the Hortus Botanicus and the Hermitage Amsterdam.

Besides music, visitors can also listen to stories about love and sexuality from ARTIS experts during these summer evenings during ARTIS tells. For example, the ARTIS-microbiologist will tell you how good microbes influence your sexual feelings, the ARTIS-astronomer will talk about passion in the starry sky and the ARTIS-zookeeper will tell you passionately about the love affair between artist and reptile keeper.

A day full of family fun

Want to travel without lugging suitcases, long queues and coronastress? Then take your children on a world tour of ARTIS. During a scavenger hunt they will get to know animals, plants and microbes from all continents. A world tour that is kinder to your wallet and to the planet. The itinerary is accessible to the whole family both during the day and in the evening.

In addition to everything ARTIS usually has to offer, the daytime program this summer has many more extras for young and old. How special love is in nature can also be experienced during the day for families with children. There are 13 stops scattered throughout the park where fun and interesting facts about love in nature for all ages can be found. Children can also learn to move like an animal during children's yoga, there are puppet shows for the youngest visitors and budding artists can express their creativity in a drawing workshop near the elephant enclosure.

In ARTIS-Micropia you will also discover love. Love for and between microbes. Marvel at the wall full of fungi at the artwork The Fungal Wall, craft your own microbe during one of the workshops or listen to love stories between microbes during the Lab Talks. In the ARTIS-Planetarium you can find refreshment during a hot summer day and visit the family film Artis de Partis in search of planet Sok, the live performance Journey through the Universe or Network Earth.

Picnicking in the grass

Those in need of a refreshing drink can settle down in the grass with the Sweltering Picknickarrangement of catering partner Vermaat. Throw out your blanket and feel the grass tickle under your feet while you sip a cold (alcoholic) drink and taste the flavors of our botanical garden. The picnic package is only available during the Sweltering Summer Nights
