ARTIS temporarily closed for visitors

– March 16, 2020

From Monday, 16 March 2020, ARTIS will be temporarily closed to visitors. This decision has been made in response to the new measures for the coronavirus announced by the Dutch government as well as the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

The government is taking drastic measures: all Dutch schools and nurseries will remain closed from Monday March 16, while catering outlets have to shut down after 18:00 yesterday evening. ARTIS will align its policy with these stricter measures. No visitors will be admitted to the entire park between 16 March until June 1.

ARTIS prioritises the welfare of animals and visitors. It has decided to close the entire park because of the possibility that crowds will form near the ticket offices or the animal enclosures due to increased amounts of visitors now that schools and cafés have closed.

As a green, open-air oasis at the centre of Amsterdam, Artis Royal Zoo served as a city park during the past few days. While Artis Royal Zoo remained open to visitors until Sunday, 15 March, microbe museum Micropia and all other indoor locations have been closed since Friday.

ARTIS will continue to monitor the situation and measures related to the coronavirus closely, updating its policy if required. For the latest information, keep an eye on our website and social media.
