registered charity
Donations and other revenues are primarily used in caring for the animals and maintaining their habitats. Artis was established in 1838 and is one of the oldest zoos on the mainland of Europe. There are always renovations to be done in a historic park like Artis.
Artis has grand plans in mind. There will be more room for the animals & plants and more room for education. The parking lot is going to move underground, freeing up 1.7 hectares of land for animals and plants. The zoo’s heritage will also receive more room and attention.
CBF seal of approval
The Central Bureau on Fundraising (CBF) keeps full records of fundraising and charities that raise funds in the Netherlands and reviews the board and policies of these charities. If the charities meet the CBF criteria, they receive the CBF seal of approval. The CBF works to promote transparency among charitable causes in the Netherlands. Artis is the only zoo in the Netherlands to meet those criteria and bear the CBF seal of approval. An astounding 90% of the funds that Artis receives are used to benefit the zoo, as described in the mission statement issued by Artis.
ANBI
In 2008, Artis received ANBI status from the Dutch Tax Authority; an ANBI or public benefit institution does not have to pay capital transfer tax or inheritance tax. As a result, the full amount of all donations can go directly to Artis. Moreover, there are tax benefits associated with regular donations to a registered ANBI charity: a periodic donation is fully tax-deductible. To receive ANBI status, the registered charity must benefit the public. In addition, the board and/or policymakers are not allowed to act as if the money is theirs. In the event that the registered charity earns a profit, the resulting funds must be reinvested in the charity.
